Remodel your Bathrooms

Most of us Filipinos do not give our bathrooms a lot of thought when we plan our houses. We often just ensure that we have a suitably sized and working one, caring less for the aesthetics because we believe the money will be better spent on other portions of the house.

But then when we see how beautiful the bathrooms in some hotels and feature homes are, we often wish that ours could have been a bit nicer than it is now. I guess it is a cultural aspect, but really most of us just don't realize that we actually spend a considerable amount of time in the bathroom.

We see and use it every day so if it looks, smells and feels beautiful then it could add a lot to our comfort, since that is the actual reason why it is called a comfort room. We should not cringe every time we go to a comfort room, public or private, because it looks and smells dirty, in fact that room should be one of the cleanest and prettiest places of any house or establishment.

It is only recently that we are starting to see the benefits of a beautiful bath or comfort room. We should not skimp on the budget for this since this will be one of the most used places in the house, so if it is beautiful, you will never dread going to the bathroom as it will always be a pleasant experience. Here are some things to consider when designing your bathroom.

  • Light and ventilation - lights set the mood in any room and it goes the same for the bathroom. If the lighting is not right it could feel a little eerie or creepy with that huge mirror facing you and shadows could play tricks on our imagination. Needless to say, ventilation is required to ensure that foul smells are expelled quickly so the location of the duct and the type of fan used are important.
  • Relative size of fixtures - toilet fixtures such as toilets, sinks and tubs vary in size and shape and about the only thing to consider about this you and your family. Pick the sizes that would fit the average person in your family and remember to choose to accommodate for the bigger members rather than for the smaller ones. A smaller person can make due on a bigger toilet but a bigger person will have a hard time on a small one. This goes the same for the size of the tub but is opposite for the height of the sink, a smaller person will have a hard time on a high sink while a tall person will have no problem in lower ones.
  • Choose the appropriate surfaces - the bathroom's surfaces dictate the aesthetic of the room so choose wisely and stick with your theme. Porcelain such as tiles are the most commonly used while synthetic stone is also gaining popularity. But whatever you choose, ensure that water does not splash on the surfaces a lot as this would cause molds and mildew if not cleaned regularly.
