Concrete Hollow Block Homes

Starting from the 1980’s until recently concrete homes specifically concrete hollow block homes became the popular choice. Due to environmental laws limiting wood harvesting, concrete hollow block became one of the most popular home construction material.

The Philippines is battered by an average of 20 strong typhoons yearly, concrete hollow block (CHB) homes was not only a practical solution but serves as a strong environmental protection against the yearly typhoon onslaught.


The basic CHB home was made up of walls (CHB) and floor that are concrete, the roof corrugated metal, jealousy glass windows in aluminum frames. This type of construction is very popular even in the provincial areas.

CHB homes has the following characteristics:

  1. Standard 6 inches thick (400 x 200 150mm) Concrete hollow block wall plastered
  2. Vertical steel bars which are 10mm diameter spaced 40cm from each other
  3. Horizontal steel bars that are 10mm diameter spaced 60cm from each other or laid every 3 layers
  4. Mortar mix (Cement : sand) with the ratio of 1:4 Compacted
  5. Wood/metal roof framing with Galvanized iron sheet roofing.

Steel Framing

Building a home can be both exciting and very tedious, you need to come up with a design that's both functional, pretty and fits your budget. So in order to have the ideal home for a place like the Philippines where seasonal extreme heat and natural disasters like typhoons and earthquakes are a staple, your home must be designed made for such.

Traditional home construction in the Philippines often involves thick concrete walls with interior framing made of wood; even the roof framing is sometimes made of wood also. What if I told you that this is a totally bad combination? The thick concrete walls trap heat during the day and will make your air conditioner work extra hard even during the night as it tries to get rid of the absorbed and stored heat in the walls, this is especially bad for a house without air condition since the heat is trapped until late evening.

Then come the rainy seasons bringing cool and damp air, wrecking havoc to the interior wooden framings of the house, they become soaked with the humid air and expand so that sometimes your doors don't even fit to their frames anymore. The constant expansion due to moisture and drying during the hot season means that your wooden frames will often become brittle, soggy or attract termites.

The solution to the above problem is having light interior wall partitions such as plaster work, gypsum boards and similar finishes framed with light metal frames ensuring that little heat get trapped and there are is no structural wood elements that would expand and deform because of moisture and heat. Metal frames are also very easy to install since they are prefabricated to have rivet and screw slots and various joints for any purpose, making them highly adjustable and customizable.

The result is fast and easy work using cheap yet strong materials that would lower the total cost on your bill of materials. They are also easy to replace so if ever you would want to remodel the interior of your home it takes lesser work removing and adding walls. Steel is also more flexible so it merely flexes a little and goes back to its original shape in a slight earthquake resulting to no damage, compared to concrete that might show visible signs of cracking after small earthquakes.

Steel is recyclable so it does not hurt the environment compared to cutting down trees for lumber.
