Concrete Hollow Block Homes

Starting from the 1980’s until recently concrete homes specifically concrete hollow block homes became the popular choice. Due to environmental laws limiting wood harvesting, concrete hollow block became one of the most popular home construction material.

The Philippines is battered by an average of 20 strong typhoons yearly, concrete hollow block (CHB) homes was not only a practical solution but serves as a strong environmental protection against the yearly typhoon onslaught.


The basic CHB home was made up of walls (CHB) and floor that are concrete, the roof corrugated metal, jealousy glass windows in aluminum frames. This type of construction is very popular even in the provincial areas.

CHB homes has the following characteristics:

  1. Standard 6 inches thick (400 x 200 150mm) Concrete hollow block wall plastered
  2. Vertical steel bars which are 10mm diameter spaced 40cm from each other
  3. Horizontal steel bars that are 10mm diameter spaced 60cm from each other or laid every 3 layers
  4. Mortar mix (Cement : sand) with the ratio of 1:4 Compacted
  5. Wood/metal roof framing with Galvanized iron sheet roofing.
