Light Wood Framed Homes

In the Philippines, it is noticeable that majority of the houses in the provinces are made up of light wood framed construction. Light wood framed homes are left over from Spanish-American era architecture, those days’ wood was relatively cheap and easily sourced.

Nowadays due to laws limiting the cutting of trees, wood prices have drastically increased, leading to cement being the modern and cheaper as well as the preferred construction material.

Light wood framed homes has the following characteristics:

  1. Light, and allows quick construction with no heavy tools or equipment. Every component can easily be carried by hand, a light wood framed house essentially becomes a large carpentry job that can be done with basic construction tools.
  2. Light wood is able to adapt itself to any geometric design, and can be clad with a variety of materials.
  3. Light wood construction can be faster depending upon the size of the project.

Light wood framed homes has these negative characteristics:

  1. Light wood framed homes are not highly fireproof, as it is made of wood.
  2. It is not strong enough to resist major wind events such as typhoons.
  3. Maintenance and upkeep cost are higher especially with older Light wood framed homes.

Storms are coming!

If you have been watching HBO's Game of Thrones or have read G.R.R Martin's books, you know that the long summer is ending and winter is coming! Well in our case here in the Philippines the long summer is also coming to an end and with it the coming of the rainy months; the "Season of Storms" seems to be an appropriate name for it if you allow me to be a bit dramatic.

leaky-roof-repair

And you know what that means, be prepared to get wet, a lot. Fortunately, the humble fortresses we call homes are there to shelter us, but in order to ensure that that it does, we have to maintain its structural integrity. We don't want to wake up one rainy night with water dripping on our heads, do we?

For the same reasons that we don't want our cars stopping dead on us, we have to periodically check our homes, specifically the roof, for potential leaks and damages if we are to ensure that we stay dry this coming months and that we can avoid costly repairs. Those small damages will certainly become bigger when the rains come, so here are a few tips to ensure that our homes are prepared for the oncoming onslaught of the Season of Storms.

  • Check for holes and damages - if your roof uses roofing shingles, this can be easily done via visual inspection even from afar, just visually check if any shingle is missing or is damaged. If your house uses a form of G.I. roofing, then you might have to get up on your rafters to check if sunlight is streaming in because that would indicate a hole.
  • Clean and repair your gutters - the gutters are there to ensure that water does not just slide over from your roof and down on your walls so check if the gutter drains have been clogged by dust or plant debris and clean them if they are in order to prevent them from overflowing during heavy rain.

Now if you find that your home needs professional work for repair and materials, head on over to SolidAce Construction & Development Corp. at Dr. V. Locsin Street Dumaguete City or call 035 422-9478,226-2880 so we can help you. We carry high quality construction materials and provide professional services so you can keep your fortress home cozy and safe because the best defense against all types of weather is preparation and planning.

Container Van Classrooms

SolidACE is working with Silliman University on its first-ever classrooms made of container vans. This is a project of the University that aims to showcase calamity-resilient structures. Twelve (12) container vans were merged to form four (4) classrooms atop an existing building of the Nutrition and Dietetics Department.

On February 17, 2015, a group of around 60 students in Civil Engineering from Silliman had an on-site orientation. SolidACE engineers walked them through the construction process and gave them a tour inside the classrooms. Opening the project site to would-be engineers is one of the corporate social responsibilities of SolidACE in order to help train and expose students to actual construction work.
